Using AI to write in English: a guide for international students

How to use AI to improve your English writing honestly, keep your own voice, and protect yourself if a detector gets it wrong.

Updated October 17, 2026

Why this matters more for you

If English is your second or third language, AI tools are genuinely useful — they catch grammar mistakes, suggest natural phrasing and explain idioms. But there are two risks native speakers face less:

  1. Losing your voice. Heavy AI editing can turn your ideas into generic, polished text that no longer sounds like you.
  2. False AI flags. Research has shown AI detectors are more likely to misclassify writing by non-native English speakers as AI-generated, because simpler vocabulary and structures look “predictable”.

An honest AI workflow

  1. Think and outline in whatever language is easiest. Your ideas are the part that must be yours.
  2. Write your first draft yourself in English, even if it's imperfect.
  3. Use AI to correct and explain — ask it to fix grammar and tell you why, so you learn.
  4. Humanize the polished version so it reads naturally rather than like a template. Interfaces in Spanish, Portuguese and Indonesian make this easier.
  5. Read it aloud and adjust anything that doesn't sound like something you would say.
  6. Keep every version. Save drafts in Google Docs or Word so your version history shows your process.
