To check if text was written by ChatGPT, scan it with an AI detector. Paste the text into humanize.beer's free GPTZero-powered scan for a human-vs-AI score in seconds, and use the checklist of common ChatGPT tells below. The score is a probability, not proof. No sign-up.
Check text for ChatGPT writing
Paste the text above and click Check for AI. The scan doesn't only look for ChatGPT — it estimates whether text came from any large language model, including Claude, Gemini, Llama and Copilot, which share many statistical patterns.
Telltale signs of ChatGPT
A detector gives you a probability. These signs help you judge for yourself:
Vocabulary
Words ChatGPT overuses compared with ordinary writing: delve, tapestry, intricate, pivotal, multifaceted, underscore, foster, realm, landscape (used figuratively), embark.
Structure
- An opening that restates the question, and a closing paragraph that summarises everything.
- Lists of exactly three items, again and again.
- Bolded lead-ins at the start of each bullet.
- Headings on short answers that don't need them.
Tone
- Relentlessly balanced: “While X has benefits, it also has drawbacks.”
- Generic encouragement: “By following these tips, you'll be well on your way to…”
- No personal experience, no strong opinions, no specific anecdotes.
Mechanics
Frequent em dashes, very few typos, and sentences of similar length throughout.
Why ChatGPT detection is hard
Once ChatGPT text is edited by a person — or a person writes in a plain, formal style — the signal weakens. That is why detectors report probabilities, and why short passages are hard to judge. For a deeper look, see how AI detectors work.
Frequently asked questions
Can it tell ChatGPT apart from Claude or Gemini?
No detector reliably names the specific model. The scan estimates whether the text is AI-generated in general.
Is it free?
Yes, free with no account.
How much text do I need?
At least 25 words. Longer passages (150+ words) give more reliable results.
