Why AI text sounds robotic — 12 tells and how to fix them

Readers can feel AI writing before they can explain it. Here is exactly what they are noticing, and how to fix each one.

Why it happens

Language models are trained to produce the most probable continuation of a text, then tuned to be helpful, safe and inoffensive. The combination produces writing that is correct, balanced and smooth — and, for the same reasons, generic. Here are the twelve patterns that give it away.

1. The throat-clearing opener

“In today's fast-paced world…”, “When it comes to…”, “Have you ever wondered…”. Fix: delete the first sentence and start with your actual point.

2. Signature vocabulary

Delve, tapestry, intricate, pivotal, multifaceted, foster, underscore, realm, landscape, testament. Fix: use the plain word you would say aloud.

3. Uniform sentence length

Sentence after sentence of 18–25 words. Fix: mix it up. Short ones land harder.

4. Everything comes in threes

“Fast, reliable and affordable.” Three bullet points, three examples, three paragraphs. Fix: use two, or four, or one good one.

5. Relentless balance

“While X offers many benefits, it also presents challenges.” Fix: if you have a view, state it.

6. Stock transitions

Moreover, furthermore, additionally, in addition, consequently. Fix: most can be deleted; the logic is usually clear without them.

7. The summary ending

“In conclusion, …” followed by a restatement of everything. Fix: end on your strongest point, or a next step.

8. No specifics

“Many experts believe…”, “studies show…”, “a variety of factors”. Fix: name the expert, the study, the factor — or cut the claim.

9. No personal perspective

AI has no experiences, so its writing has no “I tried this and…”. Fix: add one real example from your own life or work.

10. Over-formatting

Headings and bold text on a 200-word answer; bulleted lists where a sentence would do. Fix: write in paragraphs unless a list genuinely helps.

11. Emphasis inflation

Everything is “crucial”, “essential”, “vital” or “key”. Fix: save emphasis for the one thing that matters most.

12. Too perfect

No contractions, no fragments, no informal asides. Fix: write the way you talk — within reason for the context.

Fixing it faster

You can apply all twelve fixes by hand; it is good practice and the results are always the most “you”. Frequently asked questions

Why does ChatGPT use the word “delve” so much?

Models pick up word preferences from their training and tuning data. Some words end up far more frequent in AI output than in everyday human writing.

Is using em dashes a sign of AI?

Not on its own — many writers love em dashes. But frequent em dashes combined with other tells is a common AI pattern.
